Container and virtualization technologies are a growing part of IT ecosystems and may coexist with the product without impacting functionality or usability.  Liferay understands that a robust virtualization or container strategy can be integral to the success of a project, therefore Liferay has designed the product with features that enhance interoperability.

Container and virtualization technologies are to be distinguished from, does not include cloud-based infrastructure and are typically compatible with multiple cloud-based infrastructures. Container and virtualization technologies support coverage is distinct from Liferay Docker Images support coverage. Subscribers may deploy the product in virtualized machines (VMs), containers or cloud-based infrastructure without affecting their ability to receive subscription services as long as the Application Server, Database, JDK and Operating Systems used by subscribers are certified for use with the product as indicated on the Compatibility Matrix. Liferay does not test or certify the product for use with specific virtualization technologies, container orchestration engines, or container runtimes (e.g., Docker or Kubernetes).

Liferay provides official Docker images for some Liferay products and seeks to certify the application container operation of Liferay software. Container runtime, storage, and networking elements necessary to the operation of Liferay software in a container environment are tested prior to the release of a Liferay Docker image, but the selection and configuration of these elements is the responsibility of the customer. Container and virtualization technologies are not part of the product and are not covered by Liferay Subscription Services. This includes but is not limited to the architecture, development, testing and deployment of these environments. Liferay provides whitepapers, limited documentation and basic industry guidance for some virtualized or container environments. This documentation is provided to illustrate the interoperability of the product. Setup and configuration of virtualization technologies and container environments is the responsibility of the subscriber. Third-party technology vendors are responsible for resolving defects in their technology.

If a specific cloud-based infrastructure prohibits the product from directly interacting with compatible technologies, then that cloud-based infrastructure is not certified for use with the product unless stated on the compatibility matrix. Any attached services (e.g. search, file store or database applications) provided by cloud-based infrastructure are not compatible unless stated on the compatibility matrix. Attached services may be utilized as interoperable technology if they rely on an industry standard as expressed in the Interoperable Technologies support coverage section.
