Display main message boards portlet page in a more "expanded" view

It would be good if the main message boards portlet page could be displayed in a more "expanded" view. Having sub-categories/threads listed on a single line comma-separated makes it hard to quickly find the category/forum that you want. The description, # categories, # threads and actions button could be displayed against each sub-category with each sub-category appearing on a separate line. The sub-categories should still be displayed with a smaller font-size in order to differentiate them from the parent categories. This could potentially be a portlet instance configuration option (i.e. expand second-level categories or not).
